The Divine Comedy, originally Comedy is a poem of Dante Alighieri , written in triplets chained to eleven-syllable verses , and among the first examples of the genre, in the vernacular Tuscan . Considered the masterpiece of the Florentine poet, is one of the most important literary sources of medieval civilization and one of the greatest works of world literature, so far known and studied worldwide.

The poem is divided into three parts called cantos , Inferno , Purgatorio , Paradiso , each of which consists of 33 songs (except for the Inferno, which contains an extra song at the beginning, however, considered a sort of prelude to the entire poem ). And, in fact, through these three realms beyond this world that the poet imagines a journey that will lead to redemption from their sins.

The comedy, while continuing many of the distinctive ways of literature and medieval style (religious inspiration, moral purpose, language and style based on visual perception and immediate things), is also innovative, since it tends to a large and dramatic representation of reality, far from spirituality typical of the Middle Ages , aims to crystallize the vision of reality.
